Although all of the teams field their state's best, the team title pretty much comes down to the PA vs. NJ dual meet.
Each state organizes their team according to the desires of each state organization. In New Jersey, the team is composed of the winners of a trials process that is held over the course of two days at a designated site (the University of Princeton for the 2004 team). All wrestlers who placed in the top 3 in the previous year's USAW-NJ State Championships are invited to take part in the trials. The winners represent the state of New Jersey at The McDonogh School in Owings Mills, MD.
The event is sanctioned by the Maryland State Wrestling Association and USA Wrestling. All wrestlers must have a current valid USAW card. The competition is conducted using national folkstyle rules; singlets and headgear are required. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals are awarded at the end of the competition. The competition is run as a quadrangular meet, with each of the teams wrestling the other 3 teams. All periods are 90 seconds, and national scholastic rules & tie breaker rules applied.
New Jersey wrestlers who have been individual champions multiple times at this event (which is no small feat) include the following:
| Fred Santaite (3 time champion) | |
| John Mangini (3 time champion) | |
| Mike Grey (2 time champion) | |
| John Trumbette (2 time champion) |
